Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Gombi Local Government Area (LGA), located in Adamawa State, has experienced various security challenges in recent years, exacerbated by local geopolitical factors. The region is situated near borders with neighboring states and countries, and its proximity to conflict zones makes it vulnerable to a variety of security threats, including insurgency, ethnic violence, and banditry. Geopolitical strategies, including regional security agreements, local political alliances, and military interventions, play a critical role in enhancing peace and security in Gombi. However, the effectiveness of these strategies remains a matter of concern due to the complex interplay of local governance, political tensions, and economic disparities that hinder long-term stability (Bello & Musa, 2023).
This study aims to examine the geopolitical strategies that have been implemented in Gombi to enhance peace and security. It will evaluate how regional dynamics, such as ethnic tensions, political divisions, and security policies, influence local peacebuilding efforts. The study will also explore the role of local leaders and community groups in supporting or obstructing security interventions, offering insights into the broader implications of geopolitical strategies for peace and security in conflict-prone areas.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Gombi LGA faces significant security challenges due to geopolitical dynamics, including inter-ethnic conflict, the influence of external actors, and the erosion of traditional governance structures. Despite various interventions, peace and security remain fragile in the region. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the geopolitical strategies employed to address these challenges and propose solutions for improving security in the area.
